Why we shouldn't dismiss the Club World Cup and how Man Utd's tour of Asia showed how far they've fallen

While many in England criticise FIFA for flogging already tired footballers, clubs in other parts of the world see the CWC as an incredible opportunity to transform their financial fortunes.

Unsold tickets, empty stadiums and a competition played in a country deep in crisis. The prelude to FIFA’s Club World Cup could hardly have been less promising. But as Rich and Rob discuss, the riches for the new FIFA tournament have the potential to be utterly transformative. Manchester City and Chelsea, meanwhile, have been presented with a golden opportunity to build their fanbase in the U.S. while also being given the chance to trouser up to £100m.

Talking of money, Manchester United’s attempts to milk their fanbase in Asia back-fired spectacularly in an end-of-season tour that pretty much summed up the club’s seemingly endless malaise. It demonstrated, Rob says, just how far Manchester United’s stock has fallen.

Enjoy.
